In a dynamic project environment, where decisions must be made quickly and efficiently, team engagement and understanding the level of agreement regarding proposed solutions become crucial. Fist to Five is a simple yet effective voting technique that allows for quick feedback gathering and achieving consensus within a group.
It is a method of evaluation and decision-making within a team, involving showing a hand with the appropriate number of fingers—from 0 (fist) to 5 fingers—to express the level of acceptance for the discussed proposal, decision, or idea. It is often used in agile, retrospectives, sprint planning, or strategic decision-making.
| Number of Fingers | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 👊 0 – Fist | Strong opposition. I disagree and block the decision. |
| ☝ 1 Finger | Serious reservations. I will not support this decision. |
| ✌ 2 Fingers | I have reservations, but I am open to discussion. |
| 🤟 3 Fingers | Neutrality. I don’t have a strong opinion, but I am not blocking the decision. |
| 🖖 4 Fingers | I am in favor, I have minor comments. |
| 🖐 5 Fingers | Full agreement and engagement. I support the proposal 100%. |
This method has several practical advantages in a team environment:
⏱ Speed – a quick voting method that doesn't require digital tools.
📢 Transparency – everyone can immediately see how the team evaluates the proposal.
👥 Engagement – every team member expresses their opinion.
🤝 Consensus – it is easier to catch potential reservations and discuss them.
Ask for voting – everyone shows from 0 to 5 fingers.
Interpret the results:
If the majority shows 4 or 5, the decision can be approved.
If someone shows 0–2 fingers, it is worth pausing the process and discussing the reservations.
Discuss and repeat the voting if necessary.
🔹 The team is considering introducing new technology to the project.
🔹 After the presentation, each team member votes.
🔹 Three people show 5 fingers, two people show 2 fingers.
🔹 The facilitator asks the people with “2” to explain their concerns, the team discusses the risks, and jointly modifies the plan.
🔹 After the discussion, the voting is repeated – everyone shows 4 or 5 fingers. Decision accepted!
Fist to Five is not just a tool for quick voting – it is a method that enhances trust within the team, promotes transparency, and allows for building real consensus. Simple in form, yet extremely effective in practice.
It is worth using where time and team agreement are crucial – in projects, sprints, decision-making meetings, or task planning.
